We are pleased to announce that Jarkko Tapani Salojärvi has joined the University of Tartu’s Institute of Bioengineering as a Research Leader (PI) of the TreeBioTEC project as of 3 March 2026.
Dr. Salojärvi brings extensive international experience in plant genomics, computational biology, and forest biotechnology. His scientific background spans functional genomics, evolutionary biology, and population genomics, with strong expertise in computational and data‑driven methods. He has authored more than 80 peer‑reviewed publications and has been involved in major research projects in Finland, Singapore, and Europe.
He obtained his doctoral degree from Aalto University, followed by postdoctoral work at the University of Helsinki, and later joined Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) as a group leader and Associate Professor, where his research has focused on population genomics of forest trees and plant communities.
Within TreeBioTEC, his role is to establish a new research group focusing on forest biology and tree bioengineering, and to support its integration into the structure of the Institute of Bioengineering. He will work in close collaboration with ERA Chair Prof. Yrjö Eero Helariutta to strengthen research capacity at the University of Tartu.
Through his scientific experience and leadership responsibilities, Dr. Salojärvi will contribute to the institute’s broader aim to strengthen research in dendroengineering and forest biotechnology and to develop a strong research group within the TreeBioTEC project.
